In my classroom, I have always had a wonderful mix of students who celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, and BOTH! I enjoy teaching about all winter holidays because I feel it brings us closer together as a community and my students develop a strong understanding of one another’s celebrations!
In this post, I have compiled my three favorite children’s books for Hanukkah that teach about Hanukkah in a fun and child-centered way!
If you are looking to incorporate more fun Hanukkah activities into your classroom, be sure to see my post about Hanukkah Activities for Kindergarten!
My Favorite Children’s Books For Hanukkah
Latke, The Lucky Dog
One of my favorite parts of Latke, The Lucky Dog, is that the story is told from the Latke’s, the dog’s, perspective. It is a heart-warming story about a dog adopted from a shelter on the first night of Hanukkah. Throughout the story, Latke continues to get into a bit of trouble on each day of Hanukkah. While this is happening, readers are learning about the traditions of Hanukkah. This is an adorably-entertaining Hanukkah book for young children!
Shmelf the Hanukkah Elf
Shmelf the Hanukkah Elf takes a unique spin on Hanukkah. He is a Christmas Elf that is confused about how so many girls and boys on the “nice” list that are not getting presents from Santa. Shmelf learns about the traditions of Hanukkah and that children do receive presents, just in a different way. The rhyming words are also engaging to young readers and you can totally pull in some phonological awareness work!
Hanukkah Bear
An adorable bear wakes up to the delicious smell of latkes! The old woman mistakes the bear for the Rabbi and invites him in to eat! Well, the latkes are all gone and what will the actual dinner guests eat? The story is so entertaining for kids! In the back of the book, there is a traditional latke recipe and Hanukkah facts!
