Veteran’s Day Activities For Kindergarten

Hey, hey!
It’s so hard to believe that it is almost November already! That means, it is time to start planning Veterans Day activities for kindergarten!
I feel like we were just celebrating Johnny Appleseed Day in September! You can read about our favorite Johnny Appleseed Day activities here. Time just flies at this time of the school year!
Today I want to share with you my favorite Veteran’s Day activities for kindergarten that you can use with your kiddos too! My goal is to give you some fabulous ideas for celebrating some of the most important people in our lives – Veterans!
Common Core Alignment
Most of these activities are aligned with the Common Core standards. By correlating as many activities as I can with the Common Core standards, I can sneak more fun into my curriculum-packed school day! As long as I am using activities that hit the standard I need to, I can use it! The only activities that do not align are the crafting activities below. Even though they are not Common Core aligned, they are still important as they are developmentally appropriate for kindergarten in November and promote the strengthening of fine motor skills, direction following, and social studies learning. Not Common Core standards, but NECESSARY to master in kindergarten! I truly believe that these areas of learning should be Common Core standards!
Color Storage Box
Before I get started, you will see adorable, colorful little containers that I use with so many of my centers and activities! They are from this large photo case. This case is wonderful for keeping little pieces and center items organized! Not to mention looks great sitting on any shelf! I purchase them from my local craft store with a coupon. If you do not have any of these availabe around you, click the image below to see the storage box up close on Amazon!
Veteran’s Day Video
Below is a video I created using these Veteran’s Day activities. Click the photo or this link to check it out!
Veterans Day Activities for Kindergarten
1) Q-Tip Painting
Q-Tip painting is a creative, fun way to incorporate craft, learning, and fine motor strengthening! This Q-tip painting printable flag can be tied to social studies and learning about our country’s flag.
If you are on the hunt for red and blue paint, you can find them below! Washable is a must with kindergarten!
2) Poppy Craft
Poppies are so fun and a symbol of Veterans Day! This simple craft uses two coffee filters, green pipe cleaner, glue, a black pom-pom, and red paint.
Your can find red paint using the photo below!
For the sponge, I just cut a dish sponge in half. Amazon has these really great sponge painting “brushes” available. I have not tried them, but I would like to purchase them!
3) Count and Clip Cards
Count and clip cards are a fun Veteran’s Day math activity! Students simply count the objects on the cards and clip the correct number. Students in a small group can even check each other’s work! There are so many fun options for clips. See some options below!
4) Story about Veteran’s Day
This story can be used in a center using the QR code, or whole group! It is a child-friendly, educational video teaching children about Veteran’s Day. It is important for children to understand why we celebrate Veteran’s Day.
5) Veteran’s Day Coloring Page
I like to follow the video with this coloring page for children to take home and share with their families! It gives families a talking point with their children.
6) Veteran’s Day Math Activities – Memory
Math memory is a simple-to-implement, fun Veteran’s Day math activity!
7) Veteran’s Day Math Worksheets – Ten Frames
These printable ten frame worksheets can be easily differentiated to suit each level of learning.
8) Write Letters To Veterans
One way to stay “Thank you” to our Veterans is to write them letters!
9) Sight Word Foldable Books
We practiced the word “are”. With the three versions of this book, I can EASILY differentiate this activity with all of my learners! One version requires students to write “are” on each page, another students trace “are”, and on the last students underline or color the word “are”.
10) Veteran’s Day Book
This is a six-page, printable book all about Veterans Day. I consider it an “Easy Reader” because the sentences are short, word are repeated, and there are sight words throughout. First, I have my kiddos “hunt” the book for sight words and “butter them up” using a yellow crayon. After they find their sight words, we may discuss what we already know about Veterans (if we have not done that yet) and what they may read about in the book. We read the book together, stopping to discuss new vocabulary words, decode words, and ensure understanding. After reading, we talk about what the book taught us and the students can practice reading the book on their own or with a partner, and color the pictures.
11) Veteran’s Day Math Activities – Ten Frames
I love using ten frames in my classroom because they help children to learn to visually “see” a quantity.
I purchased these mini globe erasers at Target around Earth Day, so they are not currently available.
12) Veterans Day Activities for Kindergarten – Write the Room Letters
Writing the room is SO fun! This is EDITABLE, meaning I can alter the document to include any letters that my students are currently learning.
13) Veterans Day Activities for Kindergarten – Write the Room Sight Words
Writing the room can also be done with sight words! Again, this is EDITABLE so I can choose any 12 sight words I want my kiddos to practice.
14) Veterans Day Headband
What holiday is complete without a fun headband! Kindergarteners LOVE headbands!
