EDITABLE Sight Word Board Games For Kindergarten
Sight words, high-frequency words, snap words…ohh so many names for the same concept!
Mastering sight words is such an important component of learning how to read. I can’t wait to share my sight word board games for kindergarten with you! Plus, there is a freebie!
Why Sight Words Are Important?
Sight words are words that do not follow typical spelling rules or phonetic principles. These words occur frequently in the English Language as well as children’s texts. Recognizing sight words with automaticity helps to develop reading fluency and confidence, which in turn will increase overall reading comprehension. With less brain power used on decoding undecodable words, children can put more effort into reading the other words and understanding the text.
How many times do children need to be exposed to a word to remember it?
Children need to be exposed to a word, on average, 10-15 times to place it into memory. For children with learning difficulties, this number is even higher. Sight word practice needs to be varied and consistent.
Sidenote!!
When initially teaching sight words, it is important to phoneme – grapheme map the word. But that is for a whole other post! I am not promoting that children just need to rote memorize sight words. That has proven to not be effective. But children DO need repeated exposure and practice with the sight words they are learning.

One of the varieties of ways I practice sight words in my classroom is with sight word board games! These games are simple to use in center groups, guided reading warm-up activities, and literacy intervention activities. Plus these are simple to be implemented with extra classroom support and parent volunteers.
I also love to use fun manipulatives or mini erasers as game pieces!
